# How Do I Find Out if I Have Bad Credit?

October 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Most people who wonder about their credit have never actually looked at it. You can find out for free, without a fee and without hurting your credit score, by pulling your credit reports from the three national bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. That site is the one the federal government set up, and it gives you a free report from each bureau every week. Pull them, read them, and you will know where you stand within about twenty minutes.

## Where to get your credit report without paying

Start at AnnualCreditReport.com. It is the only site authorized by federal law to give you the free reports you are entitled to, and it does not try to sell you a subscription on the way out.

You can also get reports and scores through many banks and credit unions. If you bank somewhere, check your online account. A lot of institutions now show a free score right on the dashboard, updated monthly. That number is a reasonable guide, though it may come from a different scoring model than the one a particular lender uses.

A third option is a credit monitoring service. These are fine, but most charge a monthly fee. You do not need to pay anything to find out whether your credit is in rough shape. The free reports tell you everything a paid service would tell you about what is on your file.

### What is actually in the report

Your report is a record, not a grade. It lists your accounts and whether you have paid them on time, any collections or public records, the balances you carry, and who has asked to see your file. Read the whole thing, not just the headline.

## How to tell whether your credit is bad

There is no single line that says "bad." Start with the payment history section. If you see late payments, especially ones that went more than thirty days past due, that is the biggest factor working against you.

Next, look at what proportion of your available credit you are using. If your balances are close to your limits across several accounts, that reads as strain even when you have paid on time.

Then look for collections, charge-offs, or judgments. Any of those on your file will weigh on how a lender sees you.

### Why the number on your phone may not match

If your bank app shows a score of 640 and a lender later tells you something different, nothing is broken. Lenders use different scoring models, and a score is calculated from the report at a moment in time. A score you saw last month is not the score a lender sees today. Utah consumers also have the option of a security freeze, which stops most lenders from pulling your file until you lift it.

## What DRC looks at instead

Here is the part that surprises people. If you apply for a personal loan with Desert Rock Capital, the answer to the question in this post's title matters less than you think. DRC does not run a credit check on its personal, signature and installment loans, and it does not require collateral.

A real loan officer reviews your application and makes a decision based on your income and your ability to repay. Take a look at the [no credit check loans we offer](/services/no-credit-check-loans) and you will see the same idea repeated: the decision rests on what you can repay, not what a three-digit number says about you. If you are not sure whether you meet the basic criteria, the [no credit check loan requirements](/requirements) are laid out plainly before you apply.

That said, some Utah borrowers will do better elsewhere, and it is worth saying so. If your credit is in good shape and you have time to wait, a credit union or bank personal loan may come with a lower rate, and those institutions are built to serve members with solid files. An employer advance costs nothing when your workplace offers one. Applying with DRC is the right call when you need a decision quickly and a credit check is the thing standing in your way.

## Steps to take once you know where you stand

If your reports come back clean, you have your answer. Keep paying on time and keep your balances reasonable, and the file stays in good shape.

If you find errors, dispute them. Each bureau has an online dispute process, and it costs nothing. Mistakes are more common than people expect.

If you find real problems, the fix is time and consistency. Pay on time, every time. Bring balances down. Avoid opening a lot of new accounts in a short stretch. You do not have to wait for a perfect file to borrow, but the work you do now shows up later.

## Applying without a credit check

Desert Rock Capital is a licensed Utah consumer lender with branches in Salt Lake City, Orem and St. George. Loans run from $100 to $3,000, with no credit check and no collateral, repaid in fixed biweekly installments with no balloon payment and no prepayment penalty. A loan officer typically reaches a decision in about 30 minutes during business hours, and if approved, funds can be ready the same day.

You can apply online or in person, and you do not need a bank account to apply or borrow. Bring proof of income and a government-issued ID, and a loan officer will walk through the rest with you. If you would rather see how the process runs end to end before you decide, the guide to [no credit check installment loans in Salt Lake City](/blogs/loans-slc) and the [St. George installment loan guide](/blogs/st-george-installment-loans-guide) both walk through a branch visit from start to finish.

## FAQ

### Does checking my own credit hurt my score?

No. Checking your own report or score is a soft inquiry, and soft inquiries do not affect your credit score. Only a lender's hard inquiry from an application for credit can have an effect.

### How often can I get my free credit reports?

You can get a free report from each of the three national bureaus every week through AnnualCreditReport.com. Getting them more often than that does not change what is on them, since reports update on the lender's schedule, not yours.

### What is considered a bad credit score in Utah?

There is no Utah-specific cutoff. Lenders set their own standards, and a score that closes one door may leave another open. If a credit check is the obstacle, an installment lender that reviews income instead of a score is worth a look.

### Can I get a loan if I have bad credit?

Sometimes, yes. DRC does not run a credit check on its loans and reviews applications based on income and ability to repay. Approval, the amount and funding timing all depend on your situation, so a loan officer has to review your application before anything is decided.

## The bottom line

Finding out where your credit stands is free and takes about twenty minutes. Pull your reports, read the payment history and balances, and dispute anything that looks wrong. If your file is solid and you have time, a credit union or bank may be the lower-cost path. If a credit check is the thing blocking you, an installment loan that looks at income instead is built for that situation.
