# How Old to Take Out a Loan in Utah?

October 22, 2026 · 6 min read

## How old do you have to be to take out a loan?

In Utah, you generally need to be at least 18 to sign a loan agreement in your own name. Age is the first gate, but it is not the only one. A lender also needs to confirm who you are and income you can reasonably repay from. Turning 18 makes you eligible to apply. It does not make approval automatic.

That gap catches people off guard. A 19 year old with a steady job can finish an application at a branch. A 17 year old with the same job cannot sign. Below 18, an adult has to be the borrower, and that person carries the legal obligation to repay.

## Why 18 is the line

Eighteen is the age of majority in Utah. The law treats you as able to enter a contract on your own at that point. A loan is a contract, so signing one before then is not something a lender can arrange for you. A minor can generally void an agreement they signed, which is why lenders hold the line.

Age is not a credit question. It says nothing about your score or your history. It is a legal capacity question, and it gets checked the same way for a first loan and a tenth one.

## What lenders confirm beyond age

Age is one item on a short list. A real loan officer reviews every application, and the decision rests on income and ability to repay. For a personal loan in Utah, the review usually covers identity, residence, income and whether the payment fits your budget.

**Identity.** A valid US-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, a state ID or a passport. The name has to match the one on the application.

**Residence.** An address in Utah, since this lending stays in the state. A utility bill or a lease dated within the last 45 days works.

**Income.** Recent pay stubs, an awards letter for fixed income, or other proof of regular income. Loan officers look at what comes in and how steady it is.

**Ability to repay.** A loan officer compares income against existing obligations. If the numbers are tight, a smaller amount may fit better than the one you asked for, and that conversation is a normal part of the process.

The [loan requirements page](/requirements) lists the four documents in one place. Bring them and the review moves faster.

## What a borrower under 18 can actually do

A borrower under 18 has three honest options, and none of them is a workaround.

An adult can take out the loan and carry the obligation. That person is the borrower on paper, no matter who uses the money.

You can wait. If you are a few months from turning 18, saving in the meantime often shrinks the amount you need to borrow, which lowers the total cost.

You can work out a written arrangement with a family member who borrows on your behalf about who repays what. Lenders will not structure around that agreement, and the family member stays responsible to the lender either way.

## Does a young borrower or a thin file hurt the application?

A short credit history is common at 19, 20 and 21, and it is not a reason to skip applying. Desert Rock Capital offers personal, signature and installment loans from $100 to $3,000 with no credit check. Bad credit, no credit history or a past bankruptcy does not rule you out.

What carries the weight is income and stability. Six months at the same job with regular hours says more to a loan officer than a credit score does. If your income comes in tips, from gig work or on a part-time schedule, bring records of deposits that show the pattern. A first application goes smoothly when the paperwork is ready before you sit down.

Past bankruptcies come up in conversation more than people expect. A closed bankruptcy does not shut the door here, though an open one can still lead to a denial. Ask about your situation directly and you will get a straight answer.

## Applying at 18: the first month matters

The first weeks after turning 18 are when a lot of people apply for the first time, and most are surprised by how plain the process is. You fill out a short application online or in person, a real loan officer reviews it, and you get a clear decision in about 30 minutes during business hours. If approved, funds can be ready the same day.

The part worth slowing down for is the repayment schedule. Desert Rock Capital loans use fixed biweekly installments, and the number of payments depends on the amount a loan officer sets. Ask how the schedule lands next to your pay dates before you sign, not after. If you are paid twice a month on set dates, the biweekly rhythm will drift a few times a year, so plan for those stretches.

You do not need a bank account to borrow, and you do not need anyone to sign with you. Payments are voluntary toward your loan account, which is worth understanding before your first one comes due.

## Where to apply, and what to bring

Applications are handled in person at any of the three branches, or started [online](/apply) and finished at a branch. Salt Lake City and Orem keep weekday hours until 8 PM and are open Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. St. George runs Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM, and is closed on weekends. The [branches page](/branches) has addresses and current hours for all three.

Bring proof of income, a US photo ID, your Social Security card and proof of residence dated within 45 days. A first-time borrower with those four documents in hand usually moves through the review without a second visit. If you are younger than 18, bring the adult who will be the borrower instead. They will need the same documents in their name.

## FAQ

### Can you take out a loan at 17 in Utah?

No. You generally need to be 18 to sign a loan contract in your own name in Utah. An adult would have to be the borrower instead, and that person carries the legal obligation to repay.

### Does age affect the amount I can borrow?

Age is a legal requirement, not a pricing factor. The amount depends on your income and ability to repay. A loan officer sets the schedule, so ask for it in writing before you sign.

### Can I apply at 18 with no credit history?

Yes. There is no credit check, and no credit history does not rule you out. What matters is documented income and a realistic plan for the biweekly payments.

### Do I need a bank account to apply?

No. Desert Rock Capital does not require a bank or checking account to apply or to borrow. You can start online or come into a branch in Salt Lake City, Orem or St. George.

## The bottom line

Eighteen is the legal line for signing a loan in Utah, and it is the floor, not the finish. A lender looks at who you are, where you live, what you earn and whether the payments fit. If you are 18 with steady income, you can apply and get a clear decision in about 30 minutes during business hours, and if approved, funds can be ready the same day. If you are not 18 yet, the honest path runs through an adult borrower, or through waiting a few months and saving.
